Based on the Warner Bros. film and screenplay by Bob Comfort, Dogfight features a score by Broadway's stars Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, Dear Evan Hansen) and a book by Peter Duchan. There are some really great songs on this recording. Among the boldest is the way it plays at the end with the central animating ideas in The Searchers , encapsulated in the images of a soldier, a home, and a doorway. If you listen closely, you'll hear influences of Sondheim, Rodgers and Hammerstein, even Jonathan Larson.

I missed this musical in London due to illness so was happy to see there was a concert version of the entire musical performed last week. On the eve of their deployment to a small but growing conflict in Southeast Asia, three young Marines set out for one final boys night of debauchery, partying and maybe a little trouble. I wasn't too familiar with much of Pasek and Paul's work before Dogfight, but after stumbling on "First Date/Last Night" online I knew I had to hear more. Loved the movie, bought this knowing it would only contain some songs and not all, still glad with the ones it did have. The musical premiered Off-Broadway at the Second Stage Theatre in 2012, and in August 2014, the musical had its European premiere at the Southwark Playhouse in London An original score from Pasek & Paul, the Oscar-winning songwriting team behind LA LA LAND and DEAR EVAN HANSEN.It's November 21, 1963. The harmonies of the Marines in the opening numbers of each act are particularly impressive and energetic. Features tracks from Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Pete Seeger, The Weavers, and others. Lindsay Mendez as Rose is heartbreaking and draws in the listener who can't help but relate to her emotions. Menken and Ahrens/Flaherty continued. Pasek and Paul have done a fantastic job of writing a beautifully melodic score while still supporting the story line. Played in the car constantly a really good CD that tells a great story.
